Organic Food Companies Admit to Overcharging Customers. And They Don’t Feel Guilty About It

“I sat in the Kentucky mansion of a high-profile organic food company executive. It was a 500-acre, sprawling horse farm with a 25,000 square-foot main house, multiple guest houses, a 14-car garage and two olympic-size swimming pools.
“Of course we overcharge,” the executive who wished to remain anonymous, said. “What world are you living in?”
The reality is that consumer, desperate to avoid the toxic chemicals and GMO’d foods that commercial food brands offer, endure the excessive cost of the “organic food industry” which is becoming as suspect as the oncology and pharmaceutical industries. Most shoppers believe that the organic push started for the right reason but has morphed into a vicious world of avarice and deception.
“Why would you do that? Times are lean. People are struggling. The increase in cost of living has far exceeded that of wages. You are only contributing to the problem.”
The executive exhaled loudly and sipped his Pink Gin.”Money. A big house on the lake, buddy. An indoor tennis court and a home in Portofino. What do you think we are in business for?”
“To make it possible for people to eat healthier food. To make the world a better place, one meal at a time, and then to make a comfortable living,” I said. The executive burst out laughing. “Fionn, you are a piece of work my guy.
“The commercial food industry opened this door by poisoning everybody.”
“We gave them clean food and slapped the name organic on it and people will pay out the wazoo for it. Ok. It’s not illegal.”
“Maybe not illegal but unethical.”
“We’ll keep raising the prices for as long as we can. Organic apples, for example, were originally like $2.75 for a 5lb. bag. Now, it’s like $5.65. Nothing’s changed, right, so it’s pure profit. If we can, it will be $20 a bag. How do you think I live so well?”
“This conversation is bush.”
“Is it? Huh? Get the hell out of my house, Fionn. Go on. Get your sh*t and get out.”
“I was kind of hoping you’d let me stay here for the weekend. Pretty sweet setup.”
“Out!”
